Sound baths are one of those experiences that are easier to feel than to describe. Most people who come for the first time say something like: "I didn't really know what it was, but I knew I needed it." That's a good enough reason to try.
Here's what you can expect at Mystic Wellness in Petersham — plainly and without the mystique.
Before you arrive
Wear clothing you're comfortable lying down in for sixty to ninety minutes. That's genuinely all you need. Mats, blankets, and bolsters are provided — you don't need to bring a yoga mat or any equipment. Some people bring a small eye pillow, which can help with the transition between light and dark during the session.
Arrive a few minutes before your start time. If you're coming from across the Inner West — Newtown, Marrickville, Leichhardt, Stanmore — allow for parking or a short walk from Petersham Station.
Eat something beforehand if you're hungry, but don't eat heavily within an hour of the session. You'll be lying still for a while.
What happens when you walk in
The studio is quiet. That's the first thing most people notice. The studio is set up before you arrive — mats arranged, bowls placed, lighting low. Phoenix greets you, offers a brief orientation if it's your first time, and then lets you settle in without fuss.
There's no intake process, no required sharing, no ice-breaker. You simply choose a spot, lie down, and close your eyes. If something doesn't feel right physically — a bolster in the wrong place, a sound that's too close — you're welcome to adjust at any time.
What the session sounds like
The instruments at Mystic Wellness include Tibetan singing bowls of varying sizes, a large gong, and crystal bowls. Each produces a different quality of sound.
Tibetan bowls, struck or circled with a mallet, produce a rich overtone that seems to expand and change the longer you listen. The gong creates a broad, enveloping wave of sound. Crystal bowls produce a clearer, more sustained tone that many people find easier to follow.
The session typically builds slowly — softer sounds first, allowing the studio to settle, then fuller waves of sound as the session deepens. The last ten minutes usually quiet down again, bringing you back gently before the session ends.
What people experience during a sound bath
There is no correct response. What people notice varies widely:
Some drift into a state just below sleep and don't surface until the session ends. This is welcome. It means the body genuinely let go.
Some notice physical sensations — warmth, tingling, a sense of heaviness or lightness in different parts of the body.
Some find their mind wanders considerably before eventually settling. This is normal and doesn't mean the session isn't working.
Some feel a release — emotional or physical — that they weren't expecting. This is also normal and nothing to worry about.
After the session ends
Phoenix will bring you back gently — the sound quiets, there's a pause, and then a soft invitation to return. Take your time. Most people need a few minutes to feel oriented. Don't rush to stand up.
Some people feel immediately clear and light. Some feel a deep tiredness and want to rest. Some feel emotional in a way that's hard to explain. All of these are common. Drink water when you can. Give yourself a quiet afternoon if possible.
Many people find the effect builds over the hours that follow — deeper sleep that night, a quieter mind the next day. First sessions are often the least familiar. Subsequent ones tend to carry you further.
